Every year, the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) lights the way for athletes with intellectual disabilities, and at the heart of this movement is a network of dedicated officers like Deputy Victoria Janovyak. Representing the Will County Sheriff’s Office in Region E, Victoria embodies the true spirit of service, both in her daily role as a deputy and as a tireless advocate for Special Olympics Illinois.
For the past nine years, Victoria has been a steadfast supporter of the Polar Plunge, raising nearly $20,000 last year alongside her team at the Will County Sheriff’s Office. Her husband, Mike, played a significant role, contributing more than $7,000 of the total, while deputies from the coroner’s office, highway department, and beyond joined the effort.
“It’s a team effort, but this cause is personal to me,” Victoria says. “Special Olympics Illinois creates a community where athletes feel supported and celebrated. That’s what motivates me to keep going.”
Victoria’s journey with LETR began in her early years as a records clerk at the Minooka Police Department. Even then, she eagerly participated in Cop on a Rooftop events and trivia nights, sparking a passion for supporting Special Olympics Illinois. Today, she leads the charge at her department, ensuring the mission continues to grow and thrive.
Building Awareness and Inspiring Change
Victoria’s favorite event is the Polar Plunge, not only because of its fundraising potential but also because of its impact. “The Polar Plunge gets everyone talking,” she explains. “People see us jumping into freezing water and can’t believe it — but that’s the point. It raises awareness and encourages others to get involved, even if it’s just through a donation.”
Victoria and Mike also lead by example, involving their young family in the effort. Their 8-year-old twins and 4-year-old daughter have all embraced the importance of giving back. “Our kids are learning that they can make a difference,” Victoria shares.
Breaking Records, Setting Goals
While last year’s success was remarkable, Victoria is already looking ahead with a new goal of raising $15,000 for the 2025 Polar Plunge. With innovative ideas and word of mouth, her team is well on its way. “We’re constantly trying to find new ways to fundraise and get people excited about supporting Special Olympics Illinois,” Mike says. “I can’t brag about her enough — Victoria is the driving force behind it all.”
A Mission of Gratitude
For Victoria, the heart of her dedication lies in the athletes. Attending events like the Summer Games and the LETR Kick Off Conference fuels her passion. “Seeing the athletes’ excitement and knowing that someone has their back is the most rewarding feeling,” she says. “It’s a reminder of why we do what we do.”
As the 2025 Polar Plunge approaches, Victoria hopes her story inspires others to take the plunge —literally or figuratively. “You don’t have to jump into freezing water to make a difference,” she encourages. “Donate, volunteer, or simply spread the word.” Together, with incredible individuals like Victoria, we can create a world of inclusion and opportunity for our athletes across the state.
