Emmerson Hjort Models Polar Plunge Gear and Inspires Others to Support Mission
Emmerson Hjort has been a proud member of the Special Olympics Illinois community for more than 14 years, carving her path as an athlete, leader, and advocate. From gymnastics to bocce, and from snowshoeing to soccer skills, Emmerson’s athletic repertoire is as diverse as her dedication to inclusion and empowerment.
While she’s currently taking a break from sports, Emmerson’s passion for the mission of Special Olympics Illinois is as strong as ever. As the Southern Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) Athlete Liaison, Region I Athlete Leader, and 2025 Mahomet Polar Plunge Ambassador, she continues to inspire others and lead the way in advocating for inclusion and opportunities for all athletes.
A Special Role in the Polar Plunge
The Polar Plunge holds a special place in Emmerson’s heart. Having taken 14 plunges across the country, including Illinois, Wyoming, and even Alaska, Emmerson has made it her mission to inspire others to take the plunge for athletes like herself. “It’s really fun to get in the cold water, but the biggest point is to get warmed up after!” she says with a laugh. “It’s a great day with fun costumes, good food, and all for a really good cause — Special Olympics Illinois.”
As one of the faces of the 2025 LETR Polar Plunge campaign, Emmerson recently participated in a photoshoot alongside fellow athletes Brett, Luke, and Allyson. The shoot was conducted by Madeline of Peaces of You Photography, who generously volunteered her time and talent to showcase the exciting incentive merchandise participants can earn.
“It was amazing!” Emmerson recalls. “We got to wear and pose in all the cool Polar Plunge gear. My favorite is the beanie and the long coat. It was fun watching everyone model and have a blast!” The merchandise isn’t just stylish — it represents milestones of support. From the $100 sweatshirt to the $2,500 jacket, each item symbolizes a commitment to empowering Special Olympics athletes across Illinois. View this year’s incentive items.
Madeline reflected on her experience, sharing, “Working with the athletes was an incredible experience. Their excitement in showcasing this year’s iconic Plunge gear was truly inspiring.” She added, “One moment that particularly stood out was the strong bonds of affection among the athletes, their families, and the staff. The atmosphere was filled with undeniable support, a willingness to assist one another, and a genuine sense of happiness, comfort, and professionalism.”
Madeline has volunteered at numerous other Special Olympics Illinois events and has participated in the Polar Plunge with her family and friends for many years. She hopes her photos convey the confidence and happiness of the athletes, inspiring others to support their journey.
A Plunge with Purpose
Beyond the swag, Emmerson wants people to understand the greater purpose of the Polar Plunge. “Every dollar raised helps athletes like me and so many others experience sports, leadership opportunities, and friendships,” she emphasizes. The funds raised allow Special Olympics Illinois to provide life-changing programs that foster inclusion and celebrate abilities.
Emmerson’s journey embodies this mission, and her role as an ambassador ensures that more athletes can follow in her footsteps. With plans to plunge in Mahomet, Pontiac, Bloomington, and potentially Wyoming and Georgia, her dedication knows no bounds.
As Emmerson says, “It’s a great day, and everyone should do a Plunge to see how much fun it is!” So, take the plunge, reach those incentive goals, and help make a difference. Because when you support Special Olympics Illinois, you’re not just plunging into cold water — you’re jumping into a movement of inclusion, joy, and endless possibilities.
